Dr David Norman is the programme manager for the Institute of Conflict, Cooperation and Security (ICCS) at the University. His research interests are in the field of Critical International Relations Theory, with a specific focus on civil society and democratic governance under liberal development frameworks.

The Institute for Conflict, Cooperation and Security (ICCS) was established at the University of Birmingham in February 2012. Its key purpose is to promote a multidisciplinary approach to the security challenges that arise from global interconnectedness.

Lecture: Asia-Pacific Security
What are the key security threats facing states and individuals in the Asia-Pacific today? This lecture introduces students to some of the key theoretical approaches to understanding contemporary security threats in the region. This includes an examination of traditional security issues such as rising military tensions between states, as well as a range of non-traditional security issues, from energy and economic competition to environmental degradation, that have increased tension in recent years. Finally, the lecture will assess whether we should change our security practices in the region in order to ameliorate the threats to human, rather than state, security.

Lecture: Challenging the commercial role of Microfinance in Development
This talk will trace and analyse the global spread of microfinance as a key tool in the fight to end global poverty. It will argue that despite impressive levels of growth, and a number of successful case studies, the sector has undergone a commercial transition that threatens to undermine its socially-inspired origins. Evidence will be drawn from the author’s fieldwork experiences of Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) in Cambodia.
