University of Birmingham and Germany

We have a long tradition of welcoming students from Germany. There are currently 96 German students following a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the University.


Entry requirements

The following information is for guidance only and should be used together with the University's general entrance requirements and any specific degree programme requirements.

Undergraduate

Holders of the Abitur/Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife, Zeugnis der Fachgebundenen Hochschulreife or Zeugnis der Fachhochschulreife with a good overall score between 2-1/6 (gut-sehr gut - good-very good) and/or subject grades of 11-13/15 will be considered for entry to the first year of our undergraduate degree programmes.

Please refer to the information below as guidance for grade comparisons to A-level entry requirements:

A*AA: 1.2 overall in the Abitur
AAA: 1.3 overall in the Abitur
AAB: 1.5 overall in the Abitur
ABB: 1.8 overall in the Abitur
BBB: 2.0 overall in the Abitur

Specific subject requirements:

A = 13/15
B = 11/15

English proficiency: 10 (gut) in English

Please note: For applicants taking the Fachhochschulreife, we wouldn’t normally accept this qualification for entry to undergraduate programmes.

Postgraduate

Holders of a good three-year Bachelor degree, a Magister Artium, a Diplom or an Erstes Staatsexamen from a recognised university, or a good Fachhochschuldiplom from a Fachhochschule (university of applied sciences), with a minimum GPA of 2.9 (gut) for 2:1 equivalency will be considered for entry to taught postgraduate programmes.

Holders of a Magister Artium, a Diplom or an Erstes Staatsexamen from a recognised university with a minimum GPA of 2.9 (gut), or a good two-year Lizentiat / Aufbaustudium / Zweites Staatsexamen or a Masters degree from a recognised university, will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.
