The University of Birmingham welcomes applications from students from the USA. We currently have 95 American students following a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses across our five academic colleges; from Law and Shakespeare to Robotics and Biosciences.

Entry requirements

The following information is for guidance only and should be used together with the University's general entrance requirements and any specific degree programme requirements. 

Foundation Pathways

High School Graduation Diploma with 'good'/grade B/GPA 3.0 average, to include grade B in Mathematics for our Engineering and Physical Sciences pathway or grade B in Biology for our MLGS pathway that progresses to a Biology focused degree

Undergraduate

Students must hold a High School Diploma with an overall GPA score of 3.0 or above

  • Plus SAT 1 with a minimum of 1800 (at least 1900 for subjects where standard offer is AAB or higher)

    New redesigned (2016) SAT score minimum 1290 (minimum 1350 where standard offer is AAB or higher); 

    or ACT Composite Score of 27 or above. 
  • Plus 3 AP subjects (minimum of 2 UCAS AP Programme Group A subjects required) with a score of 4 - 5 depending upon chosen course requirements; 

    or 3 SAT Subject Tests (SAT II) with a minimum score of 650 in each 

    or a combination of AP Subjects (UCAS Group A subjects only) and SAT Subject Tests equalling 3 subjects in total.

Students who have not completed the above would normally be expected to have completed at least one year at an accredited US College or University.

ACT

We are registered with ACT, therefore if you wish to provide your qualifications to us you can find our details on their website.

Postgraduate

The University will consider students who hold an Honours degree from a recognised institution in the USA with a GPA of at least 3.0.

Please note that some subjects which are studied at postgraduate level in the USA, eg, Medicine and Law, are traditionally studied at undergraduate level in the UK.

English Language

You may be required to provide evidence of your English ability. Please view the entry requirements for specific programme requirements.
