Carly studies Chemistry and has been an active member of Chem Soc for the past two years, last year as vice chair and this year as charities coordinator. Her charity work has included running a food bank collection, and work with Carnival RAG throughout her degree. During the 2012-13 academic year she had to take a leave of absence due to a serious medical diagnosis requiring a bone marrow transplant, and due to her sheer determination she received the Alexander Bentley award this year for academic achievement despite difficult circumstances beyond her control.
What is your favourite place on campus and why?
My favourite place is the patch of grass outside the library, as when it’s sunny it’s the perfect place to relax and take a break from work. Another reason is its location for the farmers' market, which takes place once a month and offers some yummy treats. It's also the perfect spot for a selfie with Old Joe!
If you were to give a piece of advice to a current/prospective student of the University of Birmingham what would it be?
Embrace your time here as much as you can as it doesn't last forever, and before you know it you'll be planning your graduation outfit! Also get involved in societies as you will gain so many skills and new friends along the way!
