University of Birmingham School

In 2015, the University of Birmingham School opened to provide an outstanding education for all, regardless of background or prior attachment. A year on, the School remains true to this vision.

What's the impact?

Birmingham has the only university school in the UK, aiming to raise aspirations of thousands of children across the city by offering a unique, character-focused education, along with access to the University's outstanding facilities and staff. It has already become one of the most popular secondary schools in the city.

Why Birmingham?

The University has a long and proud history of encouraging social mobility. It is one of the most socially diverse higher education institutions in the country, and is intent on becoming the most socially diverse among the Russell Group of universities. As the only university school in the country, Birmingham offers a unique social mobility journey from the age of 11 to 21.

Mike Roden

Principal of the University of Birmingham School

“It has been a wonderful start to life here at the School. In the last year we have seen our pupils thrive and mature, and enjoy every opportunity that has been available to them. Alongside our academic curriculum, we champion character education to support our students to develop as well-rounded people.”
