Birmingham Heroes Lecture: Fighting Cancer - 10 May 2012

On Thursday 10 May, alumni and supporters of the University attended the inaugural Birmingham Heroes Lecture featuring Professor Paul Moss, Head of the School of Cancer Sciences, at the prestigious Royal Society in London.

Professor Moss delivered an inspiring lecture on the history of cancer research in the UK and the University’s work through the Cancer Research UK Clinical Trials Unit.  The event gave alumni and supporters an insight into the University’s many contributions toward cancer education and research and how the University is leading the fight against cancer with its world class research. Following the presentation, guests were invited to participate in a Q&A session with Professor Moss.

In lieu of a ticket price, guests were invited to make a donation towards treating brain cancer in children. Through their generous support, £1655 was raised. This donation will enable three children with brain tumours to take part in life saving clinical trials at the University. Dr Andrew Peet, Reader in Paediatric Oncology and Project Champion for the University’s brain tumour research in children, would like to thank everyone for their generous donation, which will only help further the University’s cutting-edge research into early diagnosis of children with brain cancer and tailored treatment.

Following the lecture, alumni and supporters were given an opportunity to meet with each other and personally speak with Professor Moss in the Venetian-inspired Marble Hall at the Royal Society.

For those that are interested, a copy of Professor Moss’s presentation can be accessed  here.
