Burkitt's Lymphoma

Burkitt's Lymphoma is an aggressive cancer which accounts for half of all childhood cancers in Sub-Saharan Africa. We have developed a drug combination which we know can save lives. Your support will help us develop our trials and ensure that as many children as possible benefit from treatment, saving more lives and helping to tackle this terrible disease.

Burkitt's Lymphoma is an extremely aggressive cancer that doubles in size every few days. It is 50 times more common in Africa than in the U.K. In developed countries, the survival rate is above 90%, but in Africa and other developing countries, the chances of survival are much lower. It is particularly prevalent in children, with incidence highest between 5 and 8 years of age.

Together we have...

At Birmingham, we have developed a new combination of drugs which have a substantial, positive impact on the progression of the cancer, but have little or no toxicity, unlike chemotherapy. Our first trials have had amazing results. In every one of the 20 children tested, the disease growth was halted within a week. In 65%, the disease had began to regress.

Together we are...

We are seeking your support to enable our next step; to expand our trials and ensure that we seize the opportunity to save lives, as quickly as possible. We now need to run a comprehensive programme of clinical trials. We have six centres committed to running trials in Cameroon, Malawi, and Ghana. Each centre will run for three years, reaching a total of 450 children. It costs just £500, or £12 a month, to send a child through these vital trials. Please help us.

Together we will...

With your support, we will revolutionise the way in which Burkitt's Lymphoma is treated in Sub-Saharan Africa, curing more children and improving their quality of life during treatment. In the short-term this will benefit children for whom chemotherapy has failed. In the long-term, our drugs may replace chemotherapy altogether. You can support medical breakthroughs which will save lives.
