Golden Girl: Pamela (far left) and her team mates, Naomi Riches, David Smith, James Roe and Lily van den Broecke celebrate on the podium after they win gold in the rowing LTA mixed coxed four Sunday (2 September)

Birmingham Physics graduate Pamela Relph stormed to Paralympic gold as part of Team GB’s Mixed Coxed Four on Sunday. Her victory with teammates, Naomi Riches, David Smith and James Roe was the only Paralympic rowing medal won by team GB.

The GB crew outpaced the German boat to win by two seconds in a time of 3min 19sec with Ukraine in third.

Pamela was part of the team that took two gold medals in 2011 at the World Cup in Munich and the World Championships in Slovenia. She had ambitions to join the Royal Engineers, but after suffering with arthritis she took to rowing in 2010 after being introduced by older sister Monica who has also competed internationally.

As well as graduating with from the School of Physics Pamela also captained the University’s award winning cheerleading squad the Pussycats during her time at Birmingham.

Good luck to all of our graduates still to compete at the London 2012 Paralympics. Find out more about their news and other UBSport successes here.
