Building our future

Growth is essential for the University to maintain its world-class status. Recent developments on the Edgbaston campus include the refurbishment of the iconic Muirhead Tower; home to the Cadbury Research Library, and of the Gisbert Kapp building; home to the School of Electronic, Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Following extensive public consultation, the University has submitted a planning application to Birmingham City Council which, if successful, will realise the transformation of our Edgbaston campus.

This five year investment will reinterpret the vision of founder Joseph Chamberlain, completing the Aston Webb semi-circle and opening up the 'green heart' of campus. The plans will create a 21st century estate and extend services available to staff, students and the local community.  Proposed developments include:

  • Expansion of the University’s ‘green heart’
  • State-of-the-art sports facilities
  • Bramall Music Building
  • A new library and cultural hub
  • Student services hub

Bramall will house a state-of-the-art 450 seat concert hall, and will be home to the University’s world-leading Department of Music.  The auditorium will be the most flexible performance space at a UK university and will benefit our students, staff and the local community. When it opens in 2012, the Bramall will finally complete Joseph Chamberlain's original architectural vision for the University of Birmingham. Find out more about our new music auditorium.

Library and Cultural Hub

A new library will provide improved opportunities for community access to the vast University collections, and cultural heritage. The new facilities, overlooking the 'green heart' will embrace new and emerging technologies for an enhanced user experience, and to provide a more efficient use of space, energy and staff resource. The ‘cultural gateway’ will be a space that can showcase our cultural collections and open up access to all. Find out more about our cultural collections and events.
