Local schools and colleges

Hope Nightingale, BA Ancient and Medieval History: "I wasn’t aware of the opportunities and experiences on offer at university until I heard staff from the University of Birmingham talk at my school. Applying through the Access to Birmingham has enabled me to take full advantage of university life and study without being fearful of the transition from school to university. It’s thanks to the University of Birmingham that I chose to attend university, a choice I have never regretted!"

Our commitment is to encourage the most able students from all walks of life, irrespective of social, economic or ethnic background, into higher education. To achieve this we work in close partnership with our local schools and colleges.

Access to Birmingham scheme (A2B)

For ten years, our flagship Access to Birmingham (A2B) scheme has been helping students from families and communities with little or no experience of higher education into university.

The scheme develops their understanding of what university can offer them and raises their aspirations and confidence in their own abilities. We work with these students over an extended period offering them the opportunity to shadow a student for a day at the University, and providing them with additional support during their Year 12 and 13 studies.

Through these initiatives, the scheme supports those most able yet least likely to take advantage of the opportunity to study for a degree at one of the UK's leading universities. Over the years, 818 students have come to Birmingham via A2B.
