The University and its community face a variety of threats from petty opportunist crime to more serious organised crime and even terrorism. There are also accidents and hazards that can be avoided, loss and damage to University assets and those things that people occasionally do which are potentially harmful to themselves or others.
The Security Department sits within Corporate Services under the Director of Hospitality and Accommodation Service (HAS). We have a staff of 60 experienced officers who cover the campuses 24/7/365. The role of the Security Department is to assist the management of the University in providing a safe and secure environment for students, staff and visitors and to ensure that the assets of the University are protected by effective and appropriate security. Our responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Providing a visible security presence as a reassurance to staff and students and as a deterrent to criminals

Monitoring CCTV

Responding to fire and intruder alarms

Controlling vehicular access through the vehicle entry points

Hazard spotting and reporting of faults, damage, risks or dangerous occurrences to the appropriate department

Providing a source of help and information to staff, students and visitors

Providing incident reports and/or statements for the University authorities and/or the police with regard to a wide variety of incidents

Providing first aid to injured persons

Responding to incidents and emergencies and dealing effectively with the situation until a more senior person takes over

Ensuring that University buildings are secured at the end of the working day and that no hazards exist

Providing a security presence at special events

Taking in lost property and where possible reuniting it with the owner

Liaison with the police and other emergency services or external statutory agencies

Providing security awareness and education to the University community

Preserving scenes of crime

Helping to ensure the health, safety and welfare of all persons on campus
The Security Office is located at the rear of Aston Webb in B Block courtyard next to the Great Hall just off the Ring Road South (between R5 and R6 on the campus map) and is staffed 24/7.
