Nursery and childcare facilities

As any parent knows, it can be challenging to juggle work and the needs of caring for your children.  At The University of Birmingham, we have two Day Nurseries offering quality childcare and education for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years:

  • Elms Day Nursery, Edgbaston campus
  • Oaks Day Nursery, Selly Oak campus

boyshoutingWe offer friendly childcare provision, filled with fun and activities based on educational play where ideas can be explored and experiences shape, stimulate and develop precious young minds and bodies.  The nurseries are registered with OFSTED and received a good grading with outstanding elements.

During the past year both locations have undergone major improvement programmes to modernise and expand the facilities and to enhance the learning, play and social environments.  This has included the creation of a new pre-school unit at The Oaks Day nursery accommodating 38 children aged 3-5 years.

Both nurseries also embarked on a process of applying for a Government led, capital-funding grant and were successful in obtaining nearly £198,000. As a result the outdoor areas will be enhanced with new play equipment and a ‘Forest School’ initiative. This is an innovative, educational approach to encourage and inspire children through positive outdoor experiences, using a woodland environment as a classroom and as a learning space for interactive play, health, recreation, social and personal development.  By participating children have the opportunity to develop intrinsic motivation, sound emotional and social skills, and these, through self-awareness, can be developed to reach personal potential and increase self-confidence and self-esteem.

boysThe nurseries operate from 07:55 until 18:20 Monday - Friday, 51 weeks of the year, closing on University closed days.  Children can attend full-time or on a session basis of morning and/or afternoon, enabling parents to make flexible use of childcare services.  Hot meals are provided at lunchtime, along with morning and afternoon snacks,  free water and fresh fruits during the day.  There are also facilities for rest or sleep.

3 and 4 year-olds may be entitled to Nursery Education Funding, please see the Nursery Manager for further information. Waiting lists are based on a first come first served basis and places are offered subject to availability.

We do hope you will give us an opportunity to show you around our childcare facilities, meet our staff, and see the interesting and exciting environment we can provide for your children.
