Social Media House Rules

We welcome our community to comment, debate, and join in the conversation on our social media pages and we love hearing from you.

Our aim is to keep our social channels a safe and welcoming place for everyone to add their voice and opinions to. It is a place to discuss the University of Birmingham, our news, research, events, and messages across our community. 

We want to keep our channels a place for healthy, open discussion and everyone has a positive, informative and safe experience, so we have a few house rules. We ask that comments: 

  • Comply with the social media platform’s Terms of Use. 
  • Are on topic - Do not post messages that are not related to the subject being discussed. 
  • Are respectful - Comments should not be malicious, offensive or attack any individual or group. Please treat everyone with respect. Bullying will not be tolerated. 
  • Do not include swearing, hate speech, are libellous or break copyright. 
  • Are not intentionally deceptive or misleading – please do not spread false information. 
  • Are respectful of people’s privacy – do not share personal details such as an address or phone number. 
  • Are not abusive, discriminatory, harassing, obscene, violent, unlawful or threatening. 
  • Do not advertise commercial products or services – no promotional materials, including links to external websites and promotions. 
  • Do not include spam or publish multiple times to spam comments. 
  • Only post in the English language – this is so that others can understand and join in. 

We may remove messages and/or disable comments where function allows, report and/or block users on our channels who do not adhere to these rules or continually break them. Anyone repeatedly using content or language which falls into the above categories will be blocked and/or reported to the associated social media platform. We will not tolerate or respond to abusive messages. 

The University of Birmingham is not responsible for comments or wall postings made by visitors to our pages and reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to screen and remove any content it deems inappropriate as per the above conditions. The University does not necessarily review every item posted by community members or from other accounts where it is tagged or mentioned, but we encourage users to ‘report’ posts that they find offensive.
