The Council is the University’s supreme governing body, responsible for setting the strategic direction and policies governing all aspects of the University’s activity. It is responsible for the University’s:

strategic planning,

organisational structure,

finances, investments and businesses,

estates, infrastructure and property,
-
employment of staff
The Council has 24 members, two-thirds of whom are independent 'lay' members (neither employees nor students of the University) and the remainder are academic staff and students. The Chair of the Council, the Pro-Chancellor, is elected from amongst the lay members. Mr Ed Smith is the current Pro-Chancellor.
