Selection and appointment of Lay Members

The Council has delegated to the Membership Committee of the Council the responsibility for inviting, receiving and assessing nominations for vacancies amongst the lay membership of the Council. The final decision about appointment of lay members is taken by the Council.

The membership and terms of reference of the Membership Committee are set out in Ordinance.

In considering nominations for lay membership, personal merit is the primary consideration.  However, the Membership Committee also takes into account:

  • The need to maintain a balance of skills and experience which meet the University's needs
  • Availability and willingness to devote a significant amount of time on a voluntary basis
  • The aim to have diversity of backgrounds and interests
