Michael Sheppard took up the post of Provost and Vice-Principal on 1 October 2008.
Michael chairs the University Planning Advisory Group, is a member of the Strategy, Planning and Resources Committee and Senate and a range of other University Committees.
Michael graduated from the University of Cape Town with MBChB (Hons), and was later awarded a PHD in Endocrinology. His career at Birmingham began in 1982, when he was appointed as a Wellcome Trust Senior Lecturer in the Medical School. He then subsequently held the roles of the William Withering Professor of Medicine, Head of the Division of Medical Sciences, Dean of the Medical School, and Pro-Vice-Chancellor.
Michael's main clinical and research interests are in thyroid diseases and pituitary disorders. He holds honorary consultant status at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and is a member of the Chief Executive's Advisory Group and a member of the new Hospital Planning Group of the same trust. He is a Non-Executive Director at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.
Michael has published over 230 papers in peer reviewed journals and has lectured at national and international meetings, particularly the UK, Europe and the USA Endocrine Societies. He has been a visiting Professor to a number of centres in the USA, Australia and South Africa and is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the European Society of Endocrinology, chair of the board of the European Journal of Endocrinology, and treasurer of the UK Society of Endocrinology.
He is a founder fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, has been a Council Member, Censor and Lumleian Lecturer at the Royal College of Physicians, and is President of the Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Ireland.
