Richard Horton has been Editor-in-Chief of The Lancet journal since 1995. He is a medical columnist and writes regularly for the Times Literary Supplement. He is currently Chairman of the Board of the Health Metrics Network, an NGO based in Geneva dedicated to improving health information systems worldwide. Richard also sits on the Council of the UK's Academy of Medical Sciences. He has honorary professorships at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University College London and the University of Edinburgh.
Richard is a Birmingham graduate (Physiology, 1983 and Medicine, 1986) and became a member of Council in August 2010. He has strong interests in global health and the contribution medicine makes to wider culture. He looks forward to seeing the University secure strong ties with the local community and to becoming truly global
