Sir Brian Burridge

The next West Midlands Military Education Committee (WMMEC) annual lecture will be given by Sir Brian Burridge, Vice-President Strategic Marketing at Finmeccanica UK and currently the Technology and Enterprise Team lead in the Defence Growth Partnership. He will talk on “The Next Strategic Defence and Security Review: Strategic Shift or Tactical Tinkering?”

The May 2015 General Election will be followed by a Strategic Defence and Security Review. While successive Governments invariably assert that the posture resulting from such reviews embraces sufficient flexibility to cope with the inevitable surprises that global instability might present, it is arguable that the years ahead represent an entirely new paradigm. Resurgent Russia, the birth of Islamic State and China's trajectory combine to add a new level of complexity. Against this backdrop, the lecture will seek to analyse the realism of Britain's aspirations on the world stage in terms of protecting our vital national interests, the resource implications represented by continuing pressure on Defence and Security budgets and the relevance of the combined result to the inter-connected and unstable world of tomorrow.
