One of Birmingham’s oldest established choirs, Birmingham Choral Union, returns to the Elgar Hall on March 29th to perform one of the best loved of all choral works, the magnificent Requiem Mass which was Mozart’s last work. Indeed the fact that the piece was unfinished at Mozart’s death has spawned an ongoing controversy as to “who wrote what”; fortunately the beauty and power of the music leave an unforgettable impression on the listener, regardless of the true origin of the various movements.
The Requiem is accompanied by another great choral work, a setting of Psalm 42, As the Hart Pants, by Mendelssohn, which is not often performed yet deserves to be much better known.
