Why study Japanese at Birmingham?

Photograph of a Japanese castle with blossom in the foregroundThe University of Birmingham has had a long association with  Japan and Japanese. This started in 1903 when the owners of the Mitsui Corporation sent family members to Birmingham to study Commerce. They graduated in 1905.

We first offered Japanese in 1990 to Engineering students. Japanese has been extremely popular ever since and has grown rapidly.  We have one of the largest number of students learning the language in the UK.
