Many degree programmes at Birmingham allow students to take one module outside their main area of specialism for at least one year. Language modules are amongst the most popular choice for MOMDs and Languages for All offers a wide variety of languages and levels.

In line with your previous language learning and qualifications, you will be placed in one of the following levels:
Level 1 - (Beginner) Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Polish, Russian, Spanish
Level 2 – (Near Beginner) Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish
Level 3 – (Lower Intermediate) French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish
Level 4 – (Intermediate) French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Spanish
Level 5 – (Higher Intermediate) French, German, Japanese, Spanish
Level 6 – (Advanced) French, German, Japanese, Spanish
Level 7 – (Post Advanced) French, German, Japanese, Spanish
Higher level students can pursue language modules in project or Tandem learning format. Please see Tandem, Project and 40 credits modules
All our courses are mapped onto the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. In many of our languages you can study at a level ranging from A1 to C1.
Level 1
Currently offered in Arabic, Chinese Mandarin, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish
Beginner – For learners with no previous knowledge of the language and a GSCE in another foreign language
IWLP Level 1: by the end of the course the majority of students will have reached A1 in certain skills
Level 2
Currently offered in Arabic, Chinese Mandarin, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish
Near Beginner – For learners with around 50 hours of previous tuition
IWLP Level 2: by the end of the course the majority of students will have reached A1 in all skills
Level 3
Currently offered in Chinese Mandarin, French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish
Lower Intermediate – For learners with around 100 hours of previous tuition
IWLP Level 3: by the end of the course the majority of students will have reached A2 in certain skills
Level 4
Currently offered in Chinese Mandarin, French, German, Japanese and Spanish
Intermediate – For learners with GCSE Grade A to C or equivalent
IWLP Level 4: by the end of the course the majority of students will have reached will have reached and consolidated A2 in all skills
Level 5
Currently offered in French, German, Japanese and Spanish
Higher Intermediate – For learners with AS Grade A to C or equivalent
IWLP Level 5: by the end of the course the majority of students will have reached and consolidated B1 in receptive skills and will be working towards B1 in productive skills.
Level 6
Currently offered in French, German, Japanese and Spanish
Advanced – For learners with A2 Grade A to C or equivalent
IWLP Level 6: by the end of the course the majority of students will have reached and consolidated B1 in all skills and will be working towards B2 in certain skills.
Level 7
Currently offered in French, German, Japanese and Spanish
Post Advanced – For learners with University undergraduate level in the target language
IWLP Level 7: by the end of the course the majority of students will have reached and consolidated B2 in most skills and will be working towards C1 in selected areas.
