Facilities

The CRF facilities on both sites have state-of-the-art equipment to enable research studies to be carried out safely and in accordance with Good Clinical Practice guidelines.

Facilities...

Our facilities include an outpatient area, inpatient beds, procedure and consultation rooms and day case beds for infusions. In addition, we house a research endoscopy suite, cardiac imaging, exercise and metabolic testing equipment, DEXA scanning, and a laboratory.

Health Research Bus...

The NIHR/Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility, Birmingham also has the first Health Research Bus (HRB). This is a pioneering mobile research facility launched in June 2010 comprising a bespoke, high specification, medical trailer unit containing state-of-the-art clinical research equipment, fully equipped for studies in both adults and children. The HRB contains clinic and procedure rooms, a bone density scanner and sample processing room.

The vision for the HRB is to facilitate research in the Community, directly engaging the multi-ethnic population of Birmingham in clinical research and to allow investigators to take the latest developments from the laboratory to clinical practice in the quickest time possible. The Bus provides ease of access for potential volunteers, many of whom find accessing hospitals difficult, time consuming, and in some cases intimidating. We anticipate that the HRB will become an integral part of our outreach activity in schools and difficult-to-reach communities over the coming years.

Advanced Therapy Facility...

A new Advanced Therapy Facility has recently been built adjacent to the CRF and will be open for studies in early 2013. This new translational extension to the CRF facility houses a specialised trial pharmacy unit, with a dedicated translational pharmacy team and facility for dispensing biological pharmaceuticals, gene therapy agents and vaccines. This is linked in the same building to a state of the art GCLP laboratory and GMP cell therapy suite that is essential for the success of our future cell therapy programme and NIHR funded Liver BRU.
