“Welcome to one of a series of podcasts produced by the Health Services Management Centre’s Library and Information Service .”

Hello, my name is Rachel Posaner and within this very short podcast I am going to briefly describe to you the 4 main current awareness services that the library has developed. We all know that it can be really difficult at times to keep up with the constant changes in the health service, so hopefully the following services that we have produced will really help you to keep in touch with the issues that you need to know about. Firstly, here at the library we produce a number of news bulletins and alerts that are aimed at keeping you informed on either a daily, weekly or monthly basis of all the top health news. Some of our bulletins you might automatically start to receive when you register with the library. These include the daily digest where you can receive all the top health news headlines on your desktop every morning. It includes easy links to key resources such as the Department to Health, Kings Fund, Nuffield Trust, BMA the BBC, HSJ as well as all the broadsheet newspapers. Our other bulletins which can be subscribed to by contacting the library team include:

   • GP commissioning bulletin
   • Community services
   • Public Health
   • Leadership
   • PPI
   • Governance
   • Integrated care
   • New book alert

Note that you can always unsubscribe from them at anytime by clicking on the @unsubscribe@ button at the bottom of the bulletin.

Moving on to Snappy searches.

Once a week we produce a quick Internet based search bulletin on topical issues. These might include: the Dilnot report, health strategies for adults with learning disabilities, the NHS White paper,…… and many more. As with our other bulletins you can chose to subscribe to the snappy searches or you can view them on our library website which is at http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/hsmc-library

, and, if you have any suggestions for the content of forthcoming Snappy searches then why not email us?

Our Electronic Journal Content Page service allows you to keep up to date in your area of interest by receiving your favourite journal content pages via email.  This service is only available to HSMC staff and contract users, however students can choose to receive a journal content pages service through the British Library’s free ZETOC service. Information on this service can be found at: http://zetoc.mimas.ac.uk

Finally, we run a Monthly Database Service, for our HSMC staff and contract users whereby we run a search in your specific area of interest on a bibliographic database such as Medline, save the search, and then set it up to send you an email notification on a monthly basis when new records that match your search criteria arrive.

If you would like to sign up for any of these services, just take a look at the appropriate section on the library’s webpage at…..http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/hsmc-library

or contact a member of the library team.

Well, that’s it. I hope that you found this podcast useful. For more information about any of the library services please contact us via our website at: http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/hsmc-library

or, phone us on 0121 414 3672, email us at: hsmc-library@contacts.bham.ac.uk or skype us at:hsmclibrary, or check us out on either Facebook or Twitter .

Thank you
