Michelle is Professor of Nursing & Director of the Centre for Pain Research at Leeds Metropolitan University.
Her research is contributing to a greater understanding of the difference nurses can make to people in pain. She also serves as a Chaplain to the Universities in Leeds as an ordained minister in the Church of England. Her research includes a project to develop educational material for health professionals to improve communication about pain for people from 5 faith groups (Jewish, Christian, Muslim Sikh and Hindu) funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and a project to explore the feasibility of developing Acorn Listening interventions funded by the Acorn Christian Healing Foundation.
Her recent/current PhD students are exploring subjects such as the impact of mindfulness meditation for long term conditions; a mixed methods evaluation of a nurse/pharmacist led pain clinic and an exploration of spiritual care giving in nursing.
