An algorithm-based approach for the examination and management of musculoskeletal Neck, Thoracic and Low Back Pain which is achievable within the time-limited nature of Primary Care consultations. Topics covered on this interactive course include:

Classifications of Spinal problems Cervical, Thoracic and Lumbar

Whiplash – what it is and what it isn’t

Red & yellow flags

Management of common spinal problems in Primary Care

Introduction to key current documents such as NICE guidelines for the management of back pain and spinal taskforce

Practical examination and assessment techniques including Waddell’s signs
Learning Objectives
The course is designed to develop the skills to manage spinal pain of a musculoskeletal cause so that participants are able to:
Within a time limited consultation:

Take a concise and relevant history
-
Conduct a quick and slick examination
-
Make an appropriate diagnosis and/or treatment plan.
Then:

Deliver appropriate primary care management within one (or over a series of) 10 minute consultation(s) AND/OR make a timely onward referral to other agencies.
Who is the course for?
The course is aimed at Primary Care clinicians including, but not limited to GPVTs, AiTs, First5 and returners to practice. It will serve as a concise revision for more experienced clinicians.
