Course Summary
Every year up to 3000 adults develop asthma because they are exposed to materials at work. This represents 1 in 6 new cases of asthma in working-age adults, and the cost to the UK economy is estimated at £100 million per annum. The early diagnosis of occupational asthma and avoidance of further exposure can lead to complete recovery for the individual worker. However, delays in diagnosing the condition and accessing specialist advice mean that two thirds of sufferers do not currently make a full recovery.
Therefore it is vital that healthcare professionals are aware of workplace hazards and risks for asthma and can assess asthma patients for work-related causes.
This one-day course uses a variety of teaching methods, including interactive case studies, in order to present an overview of the presentation of occupational asthma, workplace hazards and risks for asthma, screening and diagnosis, interpretation of investigations and finally the management of the affected worker.
