Flow Banner-01InCytometry is a bespoke, Flow Cytometry training service, perfect for new researchers and experienced scientists alike. This service will enable trainees to approach the complexity of modern Cytometry with confidence, plan better experiments and produce more accurate data.

The courses are delivered by Graham Bottley who has over 15 years experience of cytometry operation. There are three courses on offer and full training materials and online support is available. All three courses are run based on minimum numbers. Please see below and register your interest using the form provided.

Cytometry Theory Course

This full day course is instrument and experiment independent and is suitable for both novice and experienced cytometrists.
Separate modules cover the basic theory behind the science and also discuss experimental design and controls. These modules together will allow a trainee to design optimal cytometry experiments and thus obtain optimal data. Compensation is covered in detail, both theory and practical application, and various analytical and presentation techniques are discussed. The course also investigates a wide range of cytometry-specific research applications to allow a trainee to make full use of available instrumentation.

Attendance on this course will not only optimise data acquisition, but will also reduce required consumable costs due to improved experimental design. To provide the best training experience, course numbers are limited to ten trainees.

Fees: This course costs £120 to attend, lunch and refreshments are provided and the course can be paid for using a grant code.

Advanced Cytometry Theory Course

This course is intended for cytometrists who have already attended the basic course and have acquired some practical experience, but are now looking to increase their knowledge. Research specific modules look at Cell Cycle and Small Event analysis from practical and theoretical angles. Instrument specific modules also cover Flow Cytometry Cell Sorting and Imaging Cytometry, both technologies being available at the University of Birmingham.

The afternoon session looks at a data analysis workflow using various software packages and data files and explores issues of gating, population identification, statistics and data presentation.

Like the standard theory course, this advanced course is instrument independent and thus suitable for any researcher using flow cytometry.

Fees: This course costs £120 to attend, lunch and refreshments are provided and the course can be paid for using a grant code.

FlowJo Course

FlowJo X is the market-leader cytometry analysis software and has a huge range of features. However, the software also has a steep learning curve and can be very difficult to use without some instruction.

This full day course covers the basic operation of the software, along with some more advanced features, and as such is suitable for novices or those with some experience of the software. The use of official training data files means that all trainees can attend with a laptop and the software itself running under the “student” license and can follow everything demonstrated. The skills and tips covered during this course are applicable to all research areas.

Fees: This course is funded by and run in conjunction with the Tech Hub, attendance is free however lunch is not provided.
