The School of Mechanical Engineering boasts one of the leading research groups in machining technologies, thanks to a recent grant from Advantage West Midlands, which has enabled the group to establish itself and to support a large number of West Midlands-based small/medium manufacturing companies.

The formation of this centre, which comes under the remit of the Machining Research Group, has significantly enhanced the University's already considerable conventional / non-conventional machining facilities, which are arguably the best in any UK academic institution.

The Group's research is predominantly experimentally based, involves a wide range of workpiece materials although aerospace alloys and mould / die steels are central to many of the activities and it has extensive industrial support.

Typically the Group produces some 20 - 25 publications per year relating to process development, finite element modelling and machinability, including tool performance / wear analysis and evaluation of workpiece surface roughness / integrity (microstructure, microhardness, residual stress and fatigue performance).
