Collections management project

Laser scan of a Pisarro landscape paintingWork was undertaken in November 2010 to digitise a series of objects and structures from the various collections held within the University of Birmingham.

Each of the five groups; Research and Cultural Collections, Winterborne House and Gardens, Special Collections, Lapworth Museum of Geology and Barber Institute of Fine Arts; selected a range of objects to be 3D laser scanned by the VISTA Centre as a pilot study to identify how the technology could benefit them, both in terms of outreach and research.

The project ended with a launch of the data in the VISTA Centre on 16 November 2010 where the final 3D models were demonstrated on the interactive touch table and 3D power wall. The project was the first time all of the collections within the university have worked collaboratively, and will undoubtedly lead to further collaboration and further digitisation of the collection material in the future.
