If you are not able to attend
If you are unable to attend your Degree Congregation you can choose to either graduate in absentia or defer your graduation. You can select either of these options online when you receive your email inviting you to register your graduation preference.
- Graduating in absentia means you graduate in your absence, and do not attend a Degree Congregation. If you choose to graduate in absentia you will not be able to attend a Degree Congregation at a later date.
- Alternatively, if you are unable to attend your Degree Congregation, but wish to attend a Degree Congregation at a later date, you can defer your graduation.
How do I confirm that I wish to graduate in absentia?
To confirm that you wish to graduate in absentia, log onto www.my.bham.ac.uk, click on the myProgress tab then on the Degree Congregations link. Select the ‘I do not wish to attend my Degree Congregation’ option and then confirm the delivery address for your certificate.
You must choose to graduate in absentia by 1 March 2017. If you are attempting to reply after this deadline please contact us via www.studenthelp.bham.ac.uk.
How will I receive my certificate?
If you choose to graduate in absentia your certificate will be posted to the address you confirmed online. Certificates are posted using standard Royal Mail 2nd Class Post unless you purchase an alternative delivery method; therefore we are unable to provide any tracking information.
Certificates are sent in batches; therefore, friends and colleagues may receive their certificate before you.
If you need to change your delivery address, please ensure this is done before Friday 14 July 2017, otherwise your certificate will be posted to your old address and you will be charged to issue a replacement certificate.
Alternatively, you can choose to have your certificate sent via the courier DHL which will allow you to track the delivery.
This service allows you to track the delivery of your certificate and may expedite overseas delivery. As the service is provided by an external company it cannot be provided free of charge, therefore you will need to place an order via the University’s online shop.
The deadline to order DHL is Monday 31 July 2017 - only orders made by graduates themselves will be accepted.
Please ensure that you provide all of the required information and that it is accurate. These details will be passed to DHL therefore we are unable to amend them at a later date.
When will I receive my certificate?
All absentia certificates will be posted on or before 31 August 2017. Each certificate undergoes internal security checks before being sealed ready for sending and we endeavour to send your certificate as soon as possible once these processes have been completed.
If your certificate does not arrive at your delivery address by 1 October 2017 then you have three months from the date of your graduation to inform us and request a free replacement. After this you would be required to purchase a replacement from our online shop.
Can I request my certificate before this date?
This is not possible. We send certificates as quickly as possible, but owing to the number of certificates being posted we cannot slow the process down to expedite your certificate’s posting.
Can I collect my certificate?
No, we do not offer this service.
Can a friend collect my certificate on my behalf?
No, we do not offer this service.
