Formal wear for graduation ceremonies

Male graduands

As well as academic dress, male graduands usually wear a dark suit, dress shirt, tie and dress shoes.  Degree Congregations are formal occasions, so alternatives to this may be worn - casual attire however is not deemed appropriate.

Female graduands

As well as academic dress, female graduands usually wear a dark skirt/trousers, white blouse and dark shoes.  Degree Congregations are formal occasions, so alternative to this may be worn - casual attire however is not deemed appropriate.

The hood (which is part of your academic dress) is held in place by a loop that fits over a shirt button. If your blouse does not have buttons, consider bringing a pin or brooch to keep your hood in place.

Religious or cultural alternatives

Suitable alternatives to the male and female outfits suggested may be worn for religious and cultural reasons. Your outfit should always be formal.

Footwear

Please bear in mind that you will be mounting and descending a number of platform steps, so wear sensible footwear.
