The University of Birmingham and Brazil

The University of Birmingham welcomes applications from students from Brazil.  We currently have 71 Brazilian students studying on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at the University.

The University currently has agreements with a number of Brazilian funding councils, such as CNPq and FAPESP and higher education institutions including the University of Sao Paulo (USP). We organise a number of research workshops each year with universities from across Brazil and there are student and staff exchanges in both directions. An agreement with the Ministry of Sport has recently been signed to share our expertise in the field of sports science, see our press release for further information.

Entry requirements

The following information is for guidance only and should be used together with the University's general entrance requirements and any specific degree programme requirements.

Please note: If you have taken exams which are from another country's national education system (eg the Abitur from Germany or SAT and AP exams from the USA) you should consult the country specific section for that country for qualification equivalence information. If you are unsure about the acceptability of your qualifications for entry to Birmingham please contact us for further details.
 

Foundation

We will consider students who have obtained high grades in the Certificado de Conclusao de 2 Grau, the Diploma de Tecnico de Nivel Medio and the Concurso Vestibular for entry to our foundation programme - the Birmingham Foundation Academy.  For more information please visit the Birmingham Foundation Academy website

Undergraduate

The University will consider students who have taken GCE A Level examinations, the International Baccalaureate (IB), or a suitable foundation programme, such as the Birmingham Foundation Academy, for entrance to undergraduate programmes.

Postgraduate 

Holders of the Licenciado/Bachelerado or equivalent Professional Title with a GPA of 7.5 of above from a recognised Brazilian university will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees. Applicants for PhD study will preferably hold a Magister degree or equivalent.

English Language

You may be required to provide evidence of your English ability. See the entry requirements for specific programme requirements.



Scholarships

The University of Birmingham offers a range of part-fee scholarships for international students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. For full information and to apply, please see the Scholarships section.

CAPES scholarships

The Universities of Birmingham and Nottingham are offering 20 full fee PhD scholarships per annum for students from Brazil to study at either university. The scholarships will be available for students commencing in September 2013 and will be available for a maximum of three years.

The scholarships are supported by Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES), who will provide contributions towards travel and living expenses to successful candidates. Science without Borders (Ciencia sem Fronteiras)

The University of Birmingham is delighted to be one of the UK institutions selected to participate in the Science without Borders Scheme.

The Brazilian government is providing funding for both undergraduate and PhD students in certain subject areas to spend 12 months in the UK as part of their degree at a Brazilian university. Students will spend 9 months studying in the UK followed by a 3 month laboratory placement. There is also funding for Brazilian students to undertake an entire PhD in the UK.

Chevening scholarship

The International Development Department and Birmingham Business School offer a joint Chevening scholarship for a Brazilian student doing one of the their Masters or MBA programmes.

Santander scholarships

Santander offer support for international students who wish to study abroad. This can support incoming Masters students or outgoing postgraduate students.

International Postgraduate scholarships

The International Postgraduate scholarships are awards offered to one year masters overseas students.  

Doctoral Researcher Elite scholarships 

The University offers a range of postgraduate scholarships designed to support international students studying research programmes at Birmingham.

There is a thriving student community at Birmingham and we very much look forward to you being part of it. Student societies

Many nationality groups form student societies during their time at the University of Birmingham. This is an excellent way to keep in contact with home and also provides an opportunity to highlight your culture and customs in the UK.

Student societies are also a useful point of contact for prospective students to Birmingham who may want to contact current students for information.

The University of Birmingham has many strong alumni groups all over the world. Alumni groups are an excellent way of keeping in contact with the University and with other graduates from Birmingham who live in your country. Some alumni groups meet on a regular basis for social and professional events.
