 Entry requirements

The following information is for guidance only and should be used together with the University's general entrance requirements and any specific degree programme requirements.

Please note: If you have taken exams which are from another country's national education system (eg the Arbitur from Germany or SAT and AP exams from the USA) you should consult the country specific section for that country for qualification equivalence information. If you are unsure about the acceptability of your qualifications for entry to Birmingham please contact us for further details.

Level Entry requirements
Undergraduate The University will consider students who have taken A Level examinations and the International Baccalaureate (IB) for entrance to undergraduate programmes.

Many students who have studied in Kenya have followed a 12 year education system. For admission onto an Undergraduate degree programme, the University of Birmingham requires all applicants to have studied for 13 years, and therefore you may need to take a foundation year by joining the Birmingham Foundation Academy before commencing your undergraduate programme.

Holders of the KCSE (Kenyan Certificate of Secondary Education) and a suitable foundation programme will be considered for entry to our undergraduate degree programmes.

For more information please visit the Birmingham Foundation Academy website
Postgraduate Students who have completed a Bachelor degree from a recognised institution will be considered for postgraduate study at Diploma or Masters level. Most taught Masters programmes require a minimum of an upper second class degree with a minimum GPA of at least 3.0/4 or 3.5/5.

Students who have completed a Masters degree from a recognised institution will be considered for PhD study.
English Language English language at grade C or above in the KCSE is sufficient to meet the standard English language requirements. Minimum requirements vary according to the chosen programme. See the English language page for specific programme requirements.

Ann

Ann Njeri Watathi, MSc International Development (Poverty, Inequality and Development), 2011/12

"The University of Birmingham offers scholarships to international students.

You get assistance (be it accommodation, opening a bank account) from the minute you land at the airport and throughout your course.

The University has various societies, events, sports and voluntary fairs that you can enrol in to get your mind off missing your family.

The staff is very friendly and helpful with any questions and problems. The lecturers have professional experience in the subjects they teach which makes learning really enjoyable and the library is also well stocked with up-to-date reading materials. Though the course is intensive and you have so much to read, you always feel you can manage because the lecturers are so supportive.

The vibrant red-brick campus is multicultural with students from almost all countries and different backgrounds with whom you get to share meals/make friends or live together with in the student accommodation. The beautiful campus is also well connected by bus, taxis and train and this makes it easy to access the Birmingham city centre.

For those who love travelling, the EISU office organises day trips to different cities. The experience of studying at the University of Birmingham is simply a memory that lingers forever!"

"This is like a dream come true. The amount and diversity of information here is amazing, the lecturers are brilliant and the facilities are fantastic. Every day, I learn something new, I encounter something special and I experience uniqueness with every passing day.

The intellectual, liberal academic atmosphere at the University of Birmingham is ideal for postgraduate experience. As a scholar, I feel at home though very far away from home. I am so grateful for the hospitality and friendliness I enjoy here at Birmingham, this is very important to an international student like me."

Martha Anyango Omolo, MSc Money, Banking and Finance, 2011/2012

“From the moment you choose the University of Birmingham there is no turning back. They offer great assistance, responding promptly to your queries and accommodating your needs.

The scenery at the University is breathtaking with beautiful gardens and artistic buildings.

Joining the Business School was one of the best decisions of my life. You meet students from all parts of the world and feel at home. The lecturers are very helpful and there are extra tutorial classes arranged outside the normal lectures for challenging topics to broaden your understanding.

The greatest asset that I gained from the University was gaining top class research skills, and was able to carry out research on a topic of my choice using the latest research facilities such as DataStream and research estimation methods.

The University is not all about learning.  It has sporting facilities and various clubs that help meet one’s extracurricular activities. There is a world class athletic track, which I was privileged to use regularly and is a facility that was used for training for the London 2012 Olympics by some of the best athletes the world has ever had.”
