 Entry requirements

The following information is for guidance only and should be used together with the University's general entrance requirements and any specific degree programme requirements.

Please note: If you have taken exams which are from another country's national education system (eg the Arbitur from Germany or SAT and AP exams from the USA) you should consult the country specific section for that country for qualification equivalence information. If you are unsure about the acceptability of your qualifications for entry to Birmingham please contact us for further details.

Level Entry requirements
Undergraduate The University will consider students who have taken A Level examinations and the International Baccalaureate (IB) for entrance to undergraduate programmes.

The University will consider students who have successfully completed a Bachelors (Honours) degree of at least two years duration. Degrees must be from a Higher Education Commission recognised institution in Pakistan.

Many students who have studied in Pakistan have followed a 12 year education system. For admission onto an Undergraduate degree programme, the University of Birmingham requires all applicants to have studied for 13 years, and therefore you may need to take a foundation year before commencing your undergraduate programme.

Students who have achieved excellent results in their 12 year Higher Secondary Certificate (HSSC) exams with overall percentages of 70% or better will be considered for entry to the Birmingham Foundation Academy.

For more information please visit the Birmingham Foundation Academy website
Postgraduate Students with a four year bachelor degree may be considered for entry to a postgraduate degree programme. Students with a bachelor degree of at least three years duration followed by a master's degree of one or two years duration may also be considered for postgraduate entry. A CGPA of 3.2/4 or 65+ from a Pakistani university is sufficient to meet our standard entry criteria.

To be considered for postgraduate research courses we will usually require students to have completed a masters degree.
English Language You will be required to provide evidence of your English ability. The most commonly accepted qualifications are the IELTS exam (minimum scores from 6.0-7.0) and TOEFL (minimum from 550-600 paper based, 213-250 computer based or 80-100 Internet based). Minimum requirements vary according to the chosen programme. See the English language page for specific programme requirements.

Imran Khan, MSc Investments, 2011-12

“I chose the University of Birmingham because it is a British Redbrick university having its own main line rail station.

My time here was really a time full of surprises, inspiration and new challenges. I was really impressed by the beauty of the campus with a massive land covering the whole Edgbaston area and located very close to the Edgbaston Cricket ground and Bullring, which is one of the Europe’s largest shopping centre attracting tourists from all over the world.

In terms of facilities, the main library is really helpful offering a huge variety of resources to students such as books, internet, journals, etc. Also, the academic staff are extremely supportive. Attending different workshops, seminars and presentations from guest speakers was worth appreciating.

It is a great honour to be taught by highly experienced lecturers with practical minds. No doubt, the learning and sports facilities were outstanding and I really enjoyed going to the University’s Munrow Sports Complex for Swimming and Gym during my spare times.

Besides, all the top brands including Starbucks and Costa are located inside the University campus. The accommodation services were superb with well maintained rooms and provided free of cost services.

Meeting new international students was also the best experience for me as I got to know their culture in more depth and most importantly, meeting students from Pakistan in the Pakistani Society has never made me feel as if I am away from my home country.

All in all, studying at Birmingham really was a once in a lifetime experience and I will certainly never forget my time here.”

“I was already sure that I have made the right decision by choosing University of Birmingham, and the experience I had here just added more to it.

It has a beautiful red-brick campus where you have everything you desire for. The coffee at Starbucks and the yummy pizzas at Joe’s with student discounts await your presence.

It has an advantage of being the only university in UK having its own train station, and I have found this to be the most helpful facility among others. The societies won’t let your talent go into waste, be it debating, mooting or MUNing.

The extra-ordinary support I received from Employability Network in my CV building was remarkable. Our top-notch lecturers make harder things easy to understand, and they become even easier in seminars where we have to discuss the pros and cons of the established theories.

The international student atmosphere is also very friendly and I met no hardships in becoming the Student Representative of my programme. Even though I am away from home, but while living in the second biggest city in England with the beautiful canal views, shopping malls and the famous Bull at Bullring, I feel like I am at home with a multi-cultural family.”

Uzma Javed,  MPhil leading to PhD (Education) 2009-2012

"Being one of the top ranked Universities, it would not be wrong to say that the University of Birmingham is an immaculate mix of a traditional and technologically advanced learning ground.

The multicultural environment and diversity of research activities make this university stand out from others.

Being an international student one might feel apprehensive when starting a new journey, but all my worries were whisked away by the amount of support and guidance I received at every step.

The welcoming attitude and level of expertise and commitment of the faculty is highly overwhelming. The flexible timetable, online support system and class discussions and feedback of my supervisor just made the voyage considerably easy.

Birmingham being at the heart of the Midlands makes it easier for one to get around the whole country. The city itself buzzes with energy and life.

Having one of the largest international communities in the country, Birmingham is an easy choice for anyone to make while planning to enhance their studies.

The beauty of the city with its traditional canals to a breathtaking skyline gives the best of both worlds.

I would definitely recommend the University as the foremost choice to anyone planning to further their education."

Hassan Murad, MSc Investments, 2011-12

“The University of Birmingham is an excellent place to be.

The campus is beautiful and only a few of the universities in UK have purpose built campuses.

The facilities, campus life, social life, extra-curricular activities and opportunities to excel are outstanding.

Birmingham, being the second best location for all the banks and other businesses, is growing and offering more and more opportunities.

I am proud that I chose University of Birmingham for my postgraduate studies.”

Hera-Shaikh

Hera Shaikh, BA Childhood, Culture and Education (CCE) 2007-2010

"When I reminisce about the time I had spent at Birmingham as a student, I have nothing but fond memories. These three years have been a journey for me - a journey that I embarked upon when I joined Birmingham University as a student.

As an international student, choosing a University can be a daunting task. However, for me, an international student from Pakistan, this wasn’t a tough decision to make. The University of Birmingham had always been my first choice. With one of the largest international student communities in the UK, Birmingham University had always attracted me. The academics are best in their field, with diverse experiences of working around the globe.

Another attraction for me was the city of Birmingham itself. It is a city that is powered by the youth, in its true sense with students from three well-reputed universities in the UK – and a city that buzzes with life because of its shopping, night life and entertainment."
