Student Profiles
Katusiime Teddy, MBA Strategy and Procurement Management, 2010/11
"I chose to study at the University of Birmingham as the University is an internationally recognised institution. This would help me compete and work in world class businesses.
My course is an MBA in Strategic Purchasing and Strategic Procurement Management. On top of getting the MBA you get a certificate from The Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply.
The MBA is specialised and it offers you world class examples. This does help in the way you think and the way you analyse situations. The lecturers are really good, and they do give you feedback and this helps you to improve your grades.
Birmingham Business School is among the best in the UK and the MBA has been ranked as the 11th by Financial Times. The Business School is among the best in the world.
My life at the University has been great. There was a lot of learning support, lots of eating places on campus and lots of facilities to use including the main library and the Learning Centre.
There are many international students, so this helps in the adaptation process and there is much to learn from each other.
The International Students Advisory Service was helpful. They were able to help me and give me support, in particular when I lost my Dad during the course. They were supportive, they used to inquire about me and this helped me not to feel alone. They help with student queries and the response is so efficient.
I have enjoyed my time at the University, I recommend it to everyone who wants to experience world class learning but having a little fun too!"
Mariam Garelnabi, MSc Molecular Biotechnology,2010/11
"Following the completion of my undergraduate degree in Human Genetics, I chose to pursue my Masters degree in Molecular Biotechnology at the University of Birmingham.
My choice to study here was based primarily on the international reputation of the School of Biosciences, the highly equipped laboratories and all of the ground-breaking research that had been published by the staff here. My elder brother also studied at Birmingham, and highly recommended the University to me for its Cultural Diversity and high quality of teaching.
All in all, I have found student life in Birmingham to be exciting and have made many friends from all over the world!
I am grateful for the sense of community on campus, and have always felt supported by my tutors, as well as the International Relations/International Students Advisory departments of the University.
Even though my course has only lasted a year, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here. From working in the laboratory, to participating in group and class discussions, I feel like an important part of a team whose opinion is always valued. The different lifestyle classes and extra-curricular activities which are organised by the Guild of Students have also allowed me to learn new skills, have fun and stay healthy."
Rovincer Najjuma, PhD Education, 2010/11
"I am a third year PhD Education Student, as an international student I have not only enjoyed the academic and research experiences from my school and graduate school, but I have also enjoyed the support system available in terms of research supervision and guidance, skills training, online resources, career guidance, student /staff seminars. This support system has not only facilitated the process of my research but also the quality and time of completion.
I chose the University of Birmingham because it offers courses in education that not only have relevance and application to education policy, practice, innovation and change in developing countries like Uganda, but it also offers distinctive and comparative research training and experiences through its highly rated research centres and publications by staff who enjoy to work with and support students.
Socially, the University interlink, halls of residence and the Guild easily make you feel part and an active participant in the big University of Birmingham society through the social, local and international activities organised by and for students. More so, the International Student Advisory Service not only keeps you updated on UK visa requirements, changes and supports you in the visa application and renewal process( for continuing students) through training and one to one support with an advisor, but it also gives timely updates on international occurrences and safety precautions in case of an international problem.
By its location in West Midlands, and proximity to Birmingham City Centre, the University offers an experience of the British culture and multicultural experiences from the various international students."
