In-school deferment

In-school deferment allows you to temporarily suspend payments on your previous loans (Stafford, Plus, or Consolidation) while you are in school. It will also ensure that you are not charged interest on your current Stafford subsidized loan.

What is deferment?

Deferment is a temporary period during which a borrower is not required to make payments.

Eligibility

For an in-school deferment you must be enrolled into the University of Birmingham on a full-time or part-time (half-time) program. Please be aware that students who are in writing up status (also known as 'Continuation Status' or 'Thesis Awaited') are not eligible for In-school deferments.

Length of deferment

Your deferment will last as long as you meet the requirements.

Applying for a deferment

The University of Birmingham works with the National Student Clearinghouse to verify student enrolment via electronic processes, therefore no student enrolled at the University needs to complete a paper form because each students status will automatically be disseminated to their current and previous lenders.

If you have not taken out a loan whilst at the University or feel that your lender does not speak to the Clearinghouse then please contact the Student Funding Office

Other types of deferment

You may also be eligible for deferment under the following conditions:

  • Study in an approved graduate fellowship program or an approved rehabilitation training program for the disabled.
  • Seeking but unable to find full time employment.
  • Economic hardship.
  • Military service.

It is recommended that you contact your lender to discuss these options.
