International visitors

We welcome hundreds of international visitors a year to our beautiful Edgbaston campus including representatives from existing partner institutions, potential new partners, school pupils, ambassadors and senior political figures. Everyone is guaranteed a warm reception as we welcome the new perspective that they each bring. 

Vietnamese visitorsWe have recently hosted a wealth of international visitors including Ban Ki-Moon, the UN Secretary General, a delegation of higher education leaders from China for a week-long training programme in Higher Education Leadership, and the French, Swedish and Chinese Ambassadors to the UK.

Recent Visitors

President Robert Zimmer

The President of the University of Chicago President Robert Zimmer visited the campus in October 2010 to meet with the Vice-Chancellor and other senior members of staff. Whilst here he visited some of our world-class research facilities including the Environmental Metabolimics facility and the Nanoscale Physics Research Laboratory. He also attended a lunch forum event hosted by the Vice-Chancellor on 'Building World-Class Universities'.

His visit to Birmingham follows Professor Eastwood's visit to Chicago earlier in the year where he met with leaders of academic and cultural institutions in Chicago and promoted UK-US relationships developed through the Marshall Scholarship Programme. The visit provided the opportunity to discuss plans for future collaborations such as a workshop for senior administrators with University of Chicago and Northwestern, a workshop for the directors of art institutions and potential partnerships for the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences and the College of Social Sciences.

Jamaica High Commissioner

The Honourable Anthony Smith Rowe Johnson, Jamaica's 11th High Commissioner to the UK paid a courteousy visit to the University in September 2010 and whilst here took the opportunity to visit the facilities that will be used by the Jamaican Olympic Team during the 2012 Olympic Games.

Ban Ki Moon

The UN Secretary General visited the University in 2009 to meet key figures including business leaders, leading academics and politicians from Birmingham and the West Midlands region. Speaking at a specially-organised reception at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, he stressed the need for global cooperation in tackling major issues and praised the city’s work in developing a green economy through the ‘Sustainable Birmingham Initiative’ a model for a new "green" economy which could transform the city into a national green manufacturing leader.

 

Chinese ambassadorThe Chinese Ambassador to the UK

His Excellency Ambassador Liu Xiaoming visited the campus in June 2010 to learn about the University’s links with China and our representative office there. He met colleagues with research interests in China including Professor KK Cheng who is a co-Principal Investigator of the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study|. The Ambassador was keen to understand how our extensive links and partnerships benefited both the University and our partners in China. Following his visit to campus, Ambassador Liu enjoyed an evening at Birmingham Royal Ballet accompanied by Professor Michael Sheppard, Provost and Vice-Principal and Professor Lawrence Young, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of Medical and Dental Sciences.
