University launches new institute to address biggest issues facing society

Description: 250 years after the creation of the Lunar Society, which brought together leading industrialists, academics and philosophers to debate the biggest issues affecting society, the University of Birmingham is launching an Institute of Advanced Studies with a similar remit.

Description: New research from the Antarctic Peninsula published in the Journal of Geophysical Research shows that the summer melt season has been getting longer over the last 60 years. Dr Nick Barrand from the University of Birmingham led an analysis of data from 30 weather stations on the Antarctic Peninsula – a mountainous region extending northwards towards South America.
