The University of Birmingham has scooped the title Midlands Enterprise University of the Year at the Midlands Business Awards.
The institution beat stiff competition from organisations including the Universities of Aston and Wolverhampton to win the award at a ceremony attended by some of the region’s biggest business names at the National Exhibition Centre. The awards celebrate the finest business talent on offer in the Midlands.
The University’s submission was a joint effort between its Research and Innovation Services and Careers departments, and cited the range of support the University offers for enterprise, be it for students, academics or local external entrepreneurs.
Dr James Wilkie, Director of Research and Innovation Services, commented: ‘This is an especially welcome award because it shows that the Midlands business community recognises the tremendous effort that goes on at the University of Birmingham to develop local entrepreneurs and businesses.’
He added: ‘The judges were particularly impressed with the way that our ‘BizzInn’ incubator located on Birmingham Research Park in Edgbaston provides a fantastic venue for free business support. Since starting BizzInn in June 2013 we have helped 80 local entrepreneurs, students and academics to create 26 new companies and 42 jobs.’
