The EU-Asia Summit in Milan, Italy, delivered little, if any, tangible progress to resolve the crisis in Ukraine. Relations between Russia and Ukraine's major European allies remain just a few degrees above a new Cold War-style ice age. And with only a preliminary gas deal achieved between Kiev and Moscow this may be quite literally true for Ukrainians as winter approaches.

Rail safety in China is on the right track with new degree courses

The critical activities of managing safety and risk across China's vast and complex railway network is being aided by a new programme launched at the University of Birmingham, UK. The course in Railway Risk and Safety Management has been jointly developed by the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE) University of Birmingham and the High Integrity Systems Engineering (HISE) Group, University of York, UK. The first intake of graduate diploma students will enrol at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China later this month.

Future of electro engineering student group shaped at Birmingham

Impressive performance for Birmingham in new Times league table

The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2015 has placed Birmingham 15th overall, up from 16th last year. The University of Birmingham is now ranked ninth within the Russell Group of leading research intensive universities, ahead of Nottingham and Manchester.
