Government backs University of Birmingham plans to open secondary school and sixth form

Description
The University of Birmingham is delighted that the Government has approved its pioneering plans to found the University of Birmingham School and Sixth Form. This initiative enables the University to extend its excellent academic education to 11-18 year olds in Birmingham and continue to provide outstanding teacher training to the next generation of inspiring teachers. This will be the UK's first University Training school outside London and one of the first university proposals approved by the Department for Education.

University recognises two outstanding medical students

Honorary graduands for July 2012

Description
A former Conservative Home Office Minister and the Director of the BBC National Orchestra are amongst those who will be given honorary degrees at the University of Birmingham graduation ceremonies in July 2012. Ann Widdecombe and David Murray join 15 honorary graduands and more than 5000 students who will collect their degrees at 18 ceremonies in the University's iconic Great Hall (4th – 12th July).

From Shakespeare to Seventeenth Century cider: Birmingham comes to Hay

Description
Why do theatregoers enjoy watching people die? How did cider knock French wine and the Dutch navy into a cocked hat in the 17th Century? Academics from the University of Birmingham will provide an answer to these intriguing questions (among much else) at a series of lectures at the 25th Hay Festival of Literature and the Arts. This is the first time the University has worked with the world renowned literary festival to present a series of lectures.
