Brexit, Brum and Big Science

Last week, we hosted a major international particle physics conference on campus at The University of Birmingham. Over 300 participants from 41 countries discussed a wide range of scientific questions connected to the CERN Large Hadron Collider where five years ago the University played a central role in the Nobel-prize recognised Higgs boson discovery.

Is the humble fridge the key to meeting the UN's Sustainable Development Goals?

Description
The clock is ticking on the most ambitious set of international development targets ever conceived. By 2030, the UN's Global Development Goals ('Global Goals') promise to banish hunger, poverty and inequality; ensure universal access to safe water, education, health care, clean energy and decent work; and secure peace, justice, economic growth and sustainability. Achieving all this and in the timeframe set will be a monumental challenge. What is not yet widely recognised is that one critical factor will be the development of clean cooling.

Driving the revolution

Description
In the UK, 75% of families own a car, and as a population we travel over 244 billion miles a year in cars. In the near future, how we drive those miles will change dramatically. Increasingly, autonomous systems technology will control our vehicles, with intelligent automation making driving safer, more efficient and more predictable.
