The world’s fastest man chose the University of Birmingham to prepare for his next great challenge as Team Jamaica used our Edgbaston campus as their pre-Olympics training camp.

For 12 days the Jamaican Track and Field trained on campus before competing in the London 2012 Olympics Games.  With our world-class research, tailored support and spacious green campus - all on the doorstep of a bustling city - we were the perfect choice for Bolt, Blake and the rest of the record-breaking team to ensure success in London.

The team achieved incredible success at the Games, finishing third in the track and field medal table with four gold, four silver and four bronze medals. Usain Bolt became the first man in history to defend his 100 metres and 200 metres titles at the Olympics, with Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce winning gold in the women's 100 metres.

Usain Bolt and the rest of the Jamaican 4x100 metre relay team took time out after winning Olympic gold to personally thank the University.

Usain Bolt  "I'd like to say all the big up to Birmingham, the University. That’s where we trained, they really supported us. We got everything possible. We got indoor facilities, the gym and everything so, for me, it’s an honour. Thank you guys for everything you have done for me, really. Thank you."

You can also view the BBC video of Bolt, Blake and Bronze medallist, Warren Weir, praising the people of Birmingham in their interview following the 200 metre finals.
