The Barber Institute of Fine ArtsUniversity of BirminghamTHE AGE OF LEONARDO Christian Themes in Italian Renaissance Prints 13 January – 24 June 2012Print Bay, Beige GalleryMarking the loan of some of the finest Leonardo da Vinci drawings from the Royal Collection to Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery (13 January – 25 March), this special display, drawn from the Barber's collection, features ten works by some of the greatest 16th-century Italian print-makers. From Marcantonio Raimondi's intricate series of the Life of the Virgin to Agostino Carracci's awe-inspiring Ecce Homo, it explores Renaissance and Mannerist ideals in the depiction of Christian subjects. It also examines some of the printmaking techniques most favoured during this period. The display will be complemented by a superb chalk copy of Leonardo's La Belle Ferronnière by the great Neoclassical artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres.
Pugin, Dürer and the Gothic
Date
13/01/2012 - 24/06/2012
Description
The Barber Institute of Fine ArtsPUGIN, DÜRER AND THE GOTHIC 13 January – 24 June Print Bay, Green Gallery The great English architect and designer AWN Pugin passionately promoted the Gothic style. He was inspired by, among others, Albrecht Dürer (1471 – 1528), widely recognized as the greatest German Renaissance artist. As part of the Birmingham-wide celebration of the bicentenary of Pugin's birth, this display will showcase the eight prints and single drawing by Dürer from the Barber's collection. These are not only exemplary for their skilful execution and detail, but also show Dürer's innovative approach to religious and secular subjects. The display also includes stained-glass designs by two other 16th-century German artists – Hans Holbein and Abel Stimmer. The display is complemented by special labels for the other works in the Barber associated with Pugin. These include a fine late medieval Brussels wood carving, which he may have acquired, an Early Netherlandish triptych of the Deposition, which he certainly owned, and a solid oak table with an elaborately carved base, which he designed in about 1835 (on loan from King Edward's School). LUNCHTIME LECTURE: Pugin in Birmingham Wednesday 29 February 1.10pm Experts Judith Al-Seffar and Alison Wheatley join Head of Collections and Learning, Robert Wenley, for an introduction to Pugin's connections with Birmingham.
