From Marcantonio Raimondi's intricate series of the Life of the Virgin to Agostino Carracci's awe-inspiring Ecce Homo, it explores Renaissance and Mannerist ideals in the depiction of Christian subjects. It also examines some of the printmaking techniques most favoured during this period.
The Barber Institute of Fine ArtsPUGIN, DÜRER AND THE GOTHIC 13 January – 24 June Print Bay, Green Gallery The great English architect and designer AWN Pugin passionately promoted the Gothic style. He was inspired by, among others, Albrecht Dürer (1471 – 1528), widely recognized as the greatest German Renaissance artist. As part of the Birmingham-wide celebration of the bicentenary of Pugin's birth, this display will showcase the eight prints and single drawing by Dürer from the Barber's collection. These are not only exemplary for their skilful execution and detail, but also show Dürer's innovative approach to religious and secular subjects. The display also includes stained-glass designs by two other 16th-century German artists – Hans Holbein and Abel Stimmer. The display is complemented by special labels for the other works in the Barber associated with Pugin. These include a fine late medieval Brussels wood carving, which he may have acquired, an Early Netherlandish triptych of the Deposition, which he certainly owned, and a solid oak table with an elaborately carved base, which he designed in about 1835 (on loan from King Edward's School). LUNCHTIME LECTURE: Pugin in Birmingham Wednesday 29 February 1.10pm Experts Judith Al-Seffar and Alison Wheatley join Head of Collections and Learning, Robert Wenley, for an introduction to Pugin's connections with Birmingham.
Cityscapes: Panoramic Views on European Coins and Medals27 April 2012 – 6 October 2013London, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Barcelona, Venice and Budapest… Explore the historical landscapes of all these cities – and more – in Cityscapes: Panoramic Views on European Coins and Medals at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts. The third in a series of prestigious shows organised in collaboration with the British Museum, Cityscapes highlights how, between the mid 16th century to the early 19th century, many of the great cities of Europe applied the artistic tradition of the city view to their own coins and medals – the most circulated art medium. In a world dominated by dynasties and kings, these gave physical expression in silver and gold to urban pride and civic power and showcase the exquisite skill of engravers working without modern technology. The absorbing exhibition includes 100 loans from the British Museum, as well as objects from the Barber's own coin collection – one of the finest collections of Roman, Byzantine and medieval Islamic coins in the world. The wonderfully intricate images in Cityscapes feature churches, citadels, fortifications, harbours, civic buildings, houses and suburbs, emphasising military or commercial power, wealth, strength and above all, divine protection and favour. The exhibition at the University of Birmingham-based Barber Institute is accompanied by a rich and diverse programme of educational activities, lectures, gallery talks, concerts and film screenings. Cityscapes is also complemented by an online exhibition, which can be visited at www.barber.org.uk/coins Admission FreeFor more information, contact 0121 414 7333 or visit www.barber.org.uk/coins

THE BARBER OPERA Orlando Generoso by Agostino Steffani Thursday 27 and Saturday 29 September, 7 pm Sunday 30 September, 3 pmThomas Guthrie, Director Colin Timms, Conductor Attraction, infatuation, obsession, love? Reality or illusion? The noble Orlando is driven mad by such feelings and doubts. Mauro's libretto was topical at Hanover in 1691 and is relevant to society today. Based on Ariosto's epic Orlando Furioso, and set mainly in China, Steffani's opera explores human frailty in a wonderfully poignant and entertaining score. Orlando - Michal Czerniawski, countertenor Angelica - Elizabeth Cragg, soprano Bradamante - Louise Alder, soprano Medoro - Catarina Sereno, soprano Galafro - Louise Innes, mezzo Ruggiero - Marta Fontanals-Simmons, mezzo Atlante - Nicholas Merryweather, baritone Brunello - Alexander Aldren, tenor Melissa - Jennifer Harper, soprano The Musical and Amicable Society Baroque Orchestra Oliver Webber, Leader 'It was Steffani (1654-1728) who introduced young Handel to Hanover. You sense his influence on his junior at every turn – in the fluid recitative, the shortish yet beautifully turned arias, several carefully placed duets and the stylish orchestration. In these three performances [of La Libertà Contenta], warmly conducted by Colin Timms, there was beauty in just about every note.'
