Presiding over an 'Empire on which the sun never sets', the Emperor Charles V and his illustrious forebear Maximilian I enjoyed untrammelled power, not just territorially but also over the artists within their vast dominions. This programme showcases grandiose works written for them by some of the greatest composers of the early 16th century, with voices supported and complemented, as at their first performance, by the splendid sounds of cornets and sackbuts.
