Serascience Limited, a specialist cancer diagnostic company has been awarded best start-up at the 2012 Medilink West Midlands Healthcare Business Awards (6th December). The awards celebrate the very best and most promising new healthcare businesses in the region. Serascience is one of a portfolio of companies held by Bioscience Ventures Ltd, a Joint Venture between the University of Birmingham and commercial partner Abingdon health Ltd.
Serascience technology is based around monoclonal antibodies used for diagnosis and management of myeloma and related immune cell disorders. This was developed by the clinical immunology group of Professor Mark Drayson in the school of Immunity and Infection.
The innovative products will improve patient management through better diagnostic and prognostic assessment of patients with myeloma and other plasma cell disorders. For the first time patients will be offered point of care (near-patient) testing that will not only allow for more timely therapeutic intervention but will also improve their quality of life and provide efficiencies within health services.
“We are delighted that Serascience has been recognized in this way, it is a really strong example of how university research is translated into benefits for both society and the national economy”, said Dr James Wilkie, CEO of Alta Innovations Ltd, the office responsible for commercialisation of intellectual property at the University of Birmingham.
Professor Mark Drayson, School of Immunity and Infection said, "Myeloma is one of the most prevalent blood cancers and Serascience technology is developing a vital test for early diagnosis of this disease. We are extremely pleased to have recognition of this through the award”.
There were five categories for pioneering healthcare businesses across the West Midlands to enter and Serascience will now go on to represent the region on the national stage at the Medilink UK Awards in 2013.
