The Biomedical Research – Molecular and Cellular Medicine Masters degree is designed for postgraduate students who have been awarded a place on a College of Medical and Dental Science 1+3 PhD programme and acts as an introduction and foundation for their PhD studies.

Why study this course

This degree will allow you to select academic components which will:

  • develop your skills in relation to project management and research governance
  • enhance your understanding of the range of available research methods and the selection of appropriate tools for statistical analysis
  • inform your particular area of research interest

Fees and funding

The academic fees are covered by the College of Medical and Dental Sciences.

Entry requirements

Students registering for a 4 year (1+3) PhD within the College of Medicine and Dentistry are required to undertake this MRes during their first year. Students not selected for this programme of study are not eligible to register for this degree.

International students:

If you are an overseas applicant and English is not your first language you must provide evidence that you meet our Standard English language requirements

IELTS - 7.0 with no less than 6.5 in any area.

How to apply

Automatic enrolment as part of College of Medical and Dental Science 1+3 PhD programmes. If you do not hold a place on a 1+3 programme you are not eligible to apply for a place on this course.

Learning and teaching

The programme includes an introductory module which will give you exposure to the wide range of research project and supervisors and techniques available in the College in the areas of: Cancer; Cardiovascular, Respiratory & Neurological Sciences; Dentistry; Endocrinology & Metabolism, Genetics & Development and Immunity & Infection

You will undertake three 12-week laboratory-based research projects within different research teams and submit a thesis based on the research undertaken in these projects. The thesis will be assessed by a viva. Research projects are chosen from an approved list of topics suitable for a range of career aspirations. You will also undertake a research training module and receive complementary lectures detailing recent advances in biomedical research.
