Democracy, Governance and Participation

Introduction

The aim of this module is for students to develop a strong understanding of the theories that influence representative democracy and the challenges in changing societies around the world. It will cover new forms of participation and models of government, both traditional and emerging.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module students will understand:

  • The theories which underpin representative democracy and traditional patterns of participation
  • New and emergent forms of participation and the changing relationship between the citizen and the state
  • The impact of different forms of governance on citizen-state relations
