This module will introduce the student to the theory and practice of epidemiology and statistics. Theoretical concepts will be explained and used in a practical way throughout the course, via a series of worked examples and by critical appraisal of papers. Statistical methods of assessing data and protocol design will be addressed. The values of screening, risk factors associated with specific cancers and principles of statistical modelling will be discussed. Finally the value of epidemiological studies in the prevention of diseases such as cancer will be evaluated.
By the end of the module you should have the knowledge to critically appraise the epidemiological literature and understand causal factors.
